ARTICLE – Altar Servers, Part IV
Men long to be strong, women long to be beautiful. Both reflect attributes of God. He is both Omnipotent and Infinite Beauty. These, and other characteristics, complement each other. The woman is drawn to the strength of the man and to his unconditional love for her. Here there is no need to fear and true peace, security and contentment are found. This reflects the need of the creature to find its happiness and security in his All-Powerful Creator and His infinite love.
The man sees the completion of himself in the beauty and tenderness of the woman. He deeply desires to give of himself, to sacrifice himself, to provide for her well-being and protect her. Her vulnerability inspires his courage and heroism. Here we see the mystery of God’s love for His people, because He sees His own Goodness reflected in her.
No where is all of this more clearly manifested than at the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The woman stands next to Him. The new Adam redeems the world with the help of the new Eve. Despite the appearance of weakness and defeat, the glory of the triumph of love is manifested. This reality is made present at the Holy Mass.
The greatness of the woman lies in the love she receives and pours out at the foot of the Cross. We participate fully in the Mass, regardless of our external role, to the extent that we our one with this perfect worship of the Immaculate Conception. Her glory is hidden from the eyes of men, but seen by the Almighty.
As lofty and essential as the office of priest is, of itself it cannot match the greatness of the participation of the Holy Mother of God, the Co-Redemptrix. And it is she who teaches us how to love. Men and women need each other to learn how to receive Divine Love and respond with our whole heart and soul.
Next week we will conclude these reflections.
